Interpreting Japanese Head-Internal Relative Clauses
نویسندگان
چکیده
Japanese has both head-external and head-internal relative clauses (HERC & HIRC). Example (1a) shows a standard HERC. In contrast, the HIRC in (1b) has the form of an independent sentence, the bold-faced head occurring inside the relative, and it is followed by the complementizer -no and a case morpheme that relates the internal head to the matrix verb. A core question is what the interpretation of HIRCs is. How is their meaning computed compositionally, and how does this account for their differences with HERCs?

An E-type analysis of tokoro-relatives
This paper claims that tokoro-relatives in Japanese should be analyzed as involving an E-type pronoun, rather than backward control or movement. The arguments come from (i) quantifier scope, (ii) the maximality effect , (iii) negative quantifiers, (iv) split antecedents, and (v) tokoro-relative clauses without an explicit head. It also proposes a compositional semantic analysis of the tokoro-re...
متن کاملWord Order Doesn’t Matter: Relative Clause Production in English and Japanese
Comparatively little is known about how semantic properties (such as animacy) and syntactic properties (such as word order) affect production of complex sentences. Relative clauses were elicited using a picture description task that manipulated head noun animacy in both English (which has head-first relative clauses and Japanese (head-final relative clauses). Participants of both languages prod...
متن کاملSemantic Verb Classes in the Analysis of Head Gapping in Japanese Relative Clauses
This paper describes an attempt to identify case gapping instances of Japanese relative clauses, and disambiguate the case slot from which the gapping occurred. The method utilised relies principally on surface syntactic pattern matching, combined with adjunct-based verb classification and minimal semantic analysis of the head. Experimentation produced an 90% accuracy in identifying and disambi...
متن کاملSubject/object processing asymmetries in Korean relative clauses: Evidence from ERP data.
Subject relative (SR) clauses have a reliable processing advantage in VO languages like English in which relative clauses (RCs) follow the head noun. The question is whether this is also routinely true of OV languages like Japanese and Korean, in which RCs precede the head noun. We conducted an event-related brain potential (ERP) study of Korean RCs to test whether the SR advantage manifests in...
متن کاملSyntactic and Semantic Constraints on Head Gapping in Japanese Relative Clauses
0 Introduction This paper represents the continutation of research into the identiication of the relationship between the head of a relative clause and the clause body, for Japanese. Unlike many languages, a `trace' of the gap associated with the head of a gapping relative clause is not lexically marked in Japanese, and gapping and non-gapping clauses are not explicitly distinguished. Our curre...
